Mr. Walter Barnes must be put down as a good and loyal citizen in the proper use of the gun whether ho* turns it to killing Spaniards or not. Not long ago he discovered a hawk’s nest near his home in the country, close by which was a hawk which he shot and killed. A day or two there after passing the same place with his gun he saw and shot another hawk. This has been repeated until he has killed six hawks at this one neit, all old ones cf the chicken eating variety. Mr. Barnes thinks he will get some more and if be keeps on as he has ftarted he will breakup the breed in his neigbborhood.-~HeLid0rson Gold Leaf. Since Commodore Dewey took Manila the sun never has set on the Stars and Stripes, remarks the Raleigh Observer. When the Englishman boasted that the snn never set on English soil and asked a Frenchman to account for it, the man ofFra jce said it was because th© Lord was afraid to trust Englishmen in the dark. The explanation in America’s case is that by her recent acquisition of the Philippine Islands the sun rises on some part of American possessions before it seta on some other. Dress Trimmings. Beautiful line of A Groundless Apprehension So much has been said in the public prints and elsewhere as (o possible disturbances and trouble on the Atlantic coa L in view of the present war, r.ncl also of th-^ luiking danger in submarine mines and torpedoes with which our harbors have been protected, that th© timidity of a large num ber of people has been increased, and many have refrained from making their annual spring out ing to one of the seaside resorts. The best proof that these dan gers are imaginary is found m •■he fact that the great coastwise lines continue to optrale their schedule uninterruptedly. For instance, (he steamships cf the Old Dominion Steamship Com- panv, running between New York and Virginia, have lost ihono of their trips, and do not expect to do &o. So the many attractions ol this company’s short sea route along the New Jersey, Delaware, and Virginia coasts, which is con sidered free from all risk,is added the gathering of warships, strip ped for action, i a Hampton Roads. As it Indicates, it means that the parties to the agreement cannot state \vith certainty what they will need or find in case they are pur chasers. There have, however been a number cf aecisions on th© general question, hut this does not always settle disagreements that constantly arise from its use, I think the generally understood meaning ol the term is that it implies that 20 per cent, one way or another is the maximum, and to that extent it is safe to use it. In brief, therefore, more or less means that onefifth of the quantity indicated can run with the contract or agreement, and it will beheld to be good ” Sine© the declaration of war the United States Navy has taken nine Spanish steamers nine schooners, two sloops and several fishing smacks, not to mention th© destruction of the Spanish fleet at Manila. The value of the ships taken as prize money is $3,000,000. The Span iards have taken one American boat, valued at $40,000 Poutic Purrsonillcatious of .Evil. Blarlowe’s Aiepiiistopheles is tl.e fiend of the Eijj^lisli ronais-saute. Milton’s Satan and Bunyau’s Apol- lyon are the sulumn figures oonjurod up by Puritan laltli and art in the time of England's greatest religious ferment. Laslly, Goethe’s Mephis- topiieles typifies, in its cold cjmicism and matern'Ji.sm, a spirit developed by that period in (Jernian history known as “bturm und Drang.” It is hardly true that Marlowe made a philosophical interpretation of the Faust legend. Such was neither his own nature nor the tendency oi the art of his time. But if his tragedy as a whole is viewed in relation tc the century it seems pregnant with the old warning, “What shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul?” This is the somber moral tone in Mai- lowe’s verse against the materialism of his own life and the selfish soul destroying rush for the finite in the renaissance period. “Dr. Faustus” is a dramatic version of a combina tion of poiaular stories and ideas,, consisting of detached scenes often borrowed for the mere amusement of a vulgar audience, acted by char acters constructed in the convention al types of common fancy, the whole action being impelled by a mon strous but pathetic spirit of evil, who is the embodiment of current superstition and belief and a mix ture ot the comic and sublime.— “Poet Lore.” Not luclcfensible. “Mike,’’said his employer, “some of your ideas about politics are ab solutely indefensible.” “Oi don’t think so,” said Mike. “Oi’vo licked half a dozen follies in my toime for disagreein wid my oideas. ”—Cincinnati Enquirer. Th© standard which the Spanish conqueror of Mexico, Hernando Cortes, used in his march from Ver’a Cruz to the City of Mexico, nearly four centuries ago, was until recent-, ly preserved at a little church in the capital of the state of Tlaxcala. In 1820 anthracite coal was first successfully used in Philadelphia for generating steam, and it was not until 20 years later that anthracite fuel was employed with success in a blast furnace by David Thomas at Catasauaua, Pa. Slowly and Healthy Once in a greac while some one discovers a gold mine, and so becomes rich with a rush. Now an i then a business man, wUh a long look ahead, gets such control of some phase of the market that he makes a fortune in a few months, or a few days. But the gieat mass of business men who attain success grow slowly, and so healthily. I have often thought that the growth of character in a man and the growth of ability iu business are very much alike. T he Billvdle Banner The government will furnish the uniforms. All it asks of us is to furnish the men to die in ’em. The army ranks in this neigh- borheod are filling up fa^J. Tne barrels of “moonshine” arrived yesterday. The health of this community was never better than at present. AH our doctoiS have gone to the army. Our people are prostrated by the war fever, and they will not be able to sit up until after the war with Spain. Blanche K. Bruce, who died some lime ago in Washington, was a negro, whose example of gratitude and sense of propriety carrifs the best le-son to hia brethren that we know of. When he was United Stales Senator ho got a Federal appointment at Washington for his former mas ter. When the old master and his wife arrived in Washington, Sen ator Bruce’s carriage was awaiting them at the station. Biuce as sisted them into the carriage, but made no move to get in with them but walked on behind. When he got ready to present his old mas ter to the PreddeiP. Bruce sent bis private carriage io take his former owner (o the White House, and walked himself to make the presentation. This course marked this man with nobility and won for him more honor than he could have obtained in any other way. —Biblical ReoerdeD
